| 内容記述 | フィールディング(Henry Fielding)の五幕喜劇『強姦騒ぎの顛末』(Rape upon Rape)は1730年6月に公演されたが、『コーヒー店の政治家』に改題・改編されて同年12月に開演された。一方、1734年4月に上演された三幕喜歌劇『イングランドに現れたドン・キホーテ』は、フィールディングが1728年春から翌年の夏にかけて、ライデン(Leiden)大学に留学した折に着想が湧いたものとされる。発表年次と幕数等に差異は見られるが、二作とも時の宰相ウォルポールを諷刺する事を主眼とする。恋愛と政としての政治が夜陰とコーヒー店で繰り広げられるのが、『コーヒー店の政治家』が描出する世界といえる。当時のイングランドの議員選挙で選挙権及び被選挙権は、年収の証としての土地保有に根ざしていた事から、異邦人、ドン・キホーテをスペインの素封家として自国選挙に参画させる『イングランドに現れたドン・キホーテ』には、『コーヒー店の政治家』同様、イングランド国政の抱える腐敗構造、金権と衆愚政治の実態が揶揄・嘲弄されている。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | As for the time when Don Quixote in England was staged in April 1734 at Haymarket in London, it may be called the turning point when Henry Fielding changed his political support by dedicating his drama to Walpole's political rival, the Earl of Chesterfield. It is in Rape upon Rape, staged in June 1730, that we can trace the first satiric innuendo against Walpole since Fielding returned from Holland. By the coincidence between the time of Fielding's scenario writing of both works, it may be conjectured that both dramas focused on the English rotten elections during Walpole's regime. Thus The Rape upon the Rape was renamed as The Coffee-House Politician in November 1730. As the theatrical names suggest, it can be conjectured that both works set out to satirize an English rotten borough by making Spanish aliens emerge into England or a judge who is a guardian of the English judicial system, is ironically accused as a rapist. | |||||||||||
