| 内容記述 | 英国版『親指トム』とグリム童話の内容は大差無いが、グリム童話の『蛙の王様』や日本の『一寸ぼうし』の様に、蛙を叩きつけたり打出の小槌を振るとかで魔法が解ける展開にはつながらない。親指トムはハッピー・ーエンドに終わるが、フィールディングの原作や改訂版は悲劇或いは悲劇中の悲劇と題されている。英国版親指トムが狼の胃袋に収まる前段階、即ち雌牛に干し草もろとも飲み込まれる逸話を捉え、フィールディングは『悲劇中の悲劇』で巨人達を撃破した凱旋将軍トムを、赤雌牛に飲み込ませて彼の末路とする。『親指トム一代記』でも英雄トムの不慮の死として同様の場面が挿入されているが、『悲劇中の悲劇』同様に乳搾り女や狼が介在することもなく、ゴーストとなった親指トムが再登場し、トムのゴーストが刺殺されることを契機に、登場人物の死の連鎖が繰り広げられる。一方、『悲劇中の悲劇』第三幕第一場に預言者マーリン(Merlin)に姿を変えたゴーストが現れ、親指トムは婚儀を終えた幸せの絶頂期に、ゴーストの予言通りに赤牛に飲み込まれて頓死する。親指トムの死を契機に前作同様、登場人物は次々と凶刃に倒れる。旧来の親指トムでは夢想し得ぬ結末に、フィールディング劇の真骨頂がある。何故フィールディングはハピー・エンドに終わる童話の体を借りて悲劇化を目論んだのか。この課題は劇作家フィールディングの野望と18世紀英国演劇界の状況を把握せずして理解は覚束ないだろう。「きき台詞」の多さや多様さは、芝居通や文芸批評家の衒学さへのフィールディング流諷刺の一端で、専門家気取りの演劇関係者への痛烈な皮肉として、周到に練られた策ではなかったか。前世紀のコングリーブ(William Congreve)等による『風俗喜劇』(Comedy of Manners)が急速に廃れた現実を前に、ホメロス、ウェルギリウス、ルキアノス等の古典に慣れ親しんだフィールディングは、演劇界で糧を得ようとして道化劇や英雄悲劇の形式を踏襲するのも、その紋切り型の手法を揶揄する折衷案、即ち英雄悲劇を茶化す笑劇に活路を見出した。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Unlike the happy ending of the original fairly tale, Fielding takes Tom Thumb as its hero a Lilliputian general winning over the giants. It is during Tom thumb 's triumphant return that he is swallowed by the red cow. As an afterpiece of The Author's Farce, The Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great, A Tragedy was staged at the Haymarket Theatre in London on the 24th of April in 1730. By lengthening that two-act drama, Fielding renamed the piece The Tragedy of Tragedies, or the Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great reaching the stage next spring. There is no difference in the endings between the two; both Tom Thumbs are doomed to be swallowed by cows and all the main characters slaying one another except the king killing himself at the blood-stained final scene. To create a satire of the heroic drama which was cultivated by Dryden, Lee and their followers during the Restoration, and which was still popular in the first quater of the 18th century in England, Fielding slipped in a parody based on the fairy tale Tom Thumb. | |||||||||||
