「ジャーナリズムは今（現在）を伝える」という言葉で，ジャーナリズムの機能が語られることがある。本稿の目的は，このように表現されるジャーナリズムの機能を，ニクラス・ルーマンの社会システム理論の観点から明らかにすることである。ルーマンはマスメディアを「情報/非情報」の二値コードによる選択を行うシステムとして定式化した。この場合の「情報」とは，システムの作動を継続させていくものことを意味する。ジャーナリズムが「情報/非情報」の二値コードによる選択を行うとは，情報を通じて構造的カップリングの状態にある他の社会システムを作動させることである。ジャーナリズムが別の社会システムを作動させるその瞬間，過去と未来を切り離す「今(現在)」が生み出されるのである。
A common observation is that journalism reports what is happening "now." This study tries to clarify the meaning of such a statement, and examines the functions of journalism from the viewpoint of Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory. According to Luhmann, the code of the system of mass media is the distinction between information and non-information, and the mass media is a social system that operates based on the binary codes of information and non-information. Information is something that stimulates a social system to operate. When journalism provides news, the social system forms a "structural coupling" with journalism, and the social system is then stimulated to start its operation anew. When journalists say that journalism reports what happens "now," the word "now" denotes the moment when the social system they cover is stimulated to start its operation anew.
