According to Luhmann, the code of the system of mass media is the distinction between information and non-information, and the mass media is a social system that operates based on the binary codes of information and non-information. Information is something that stimulates a social system to operate. When journalism provides news, the social system forms a \"structural coupling\" with journalism, and the social system is then stimulated to start its operation anew. When journalists say that journalism reports what happens \"now,\" the word \"now\" denotes the moment when the social system they cover is stimulated to start its operation
