ナボコフがゴーゴリ論の中で使って有名になったposhlostという語は、ゴーゴリ自身が自分の作品を論じるにあたって使った語だが、その後メレシコフスキイ、ゼンコフスキイらさまざまな批評家もゴーゴリの作品を論じるにあたって用いてきた。本論では、poshlostという語の意味の変化を追いながら、その意味の広がりを検討し、ナボコフの用法によってこの語を理解することの危険性を指摘した。
"Poshlost" is a Russian word which Vladimir Nabokov helped popularize in his book on Nikolai Gogol. But this word was also used by many critics who discussed Gogol's works, and it contains wide range of meanings. Here we survey the various meanings and conclude that it is dangerous to understand this word only by means of Nabokov's usage.
