Memory（邦訳：『ユダヤ人の記憶 ユダヤ人の歴史』）が出版されてから30 年以上が経過した。このイェルシャルミの著書は、新しい世代のユダヤ史研究者たちに影響を与えたが、それと同時に、この著書は、伝統に代わるものとしての歴史の役割に関しては悲観的であったし、歴史家の仕事がはたしてユダヤ人の記憶と共鳴するかについても懐疑的であった。本論考において著者は、近代のユダヤ史家のなかで最も偉大な４人、すなわちハインリヒ・グレーツ、シモン・ドゥブノブ、イツハク・フリッツ・ベール、サロー・バロンに論を絞る。第一に、これらのユダヤ史家がそれぞれ、モーゼス・マイモニデスという突出した人物に代表される中世ユダヤ合理主義をどのように分析したのか、第二に、彼らが、ユダヤ神秘主義であるカバラーをどのように評価したのか、以上の二点について考察する。著者の目的は、上述のイェルシャルミ教授の悲観主義に異議を唱えることであり、ユダヤ人の信仰や生活を記述する歴史家のおかげで、伝統、記憶、過去に関する我々の理解がいかに豊かなものになりうるかということを示すことである。著者はもちろん、『ユダヤ人の記憶
