The scholarship advanced mainly over the following five arguments: the origin and major factors causing the \"incarcerate turn\" to mass incarceration; the importance of \"race\" in mass incarceration; the continuities and discontinuities of past racism and its consequences; the correlation between criminal control and other punitive controls such as border/immigration control; and the complicity of punitive control in building a \"democratic\" nation state. Japanese scholarship in these arguments rather lags behind that conducted in the U.S., but it is gradually
