However, Schleiermacher, who is regarded as the father of modern Protestant theology, was primarily concerned with reconstructing a theology that corresponds to the modern spirit. In this lecture, by drawing upon his major works I clarify the structure of theology as a reaffirmation of religion (piety) against the backdrop of a reflection on human existence in general, as an organic community of general (secular) studies, and as one oriented toward a dialogue between essence and
