As the research so far has revealed, the Shafi‘ī school is the only school among the four major Sunni schools that has denied the normativity of the opinion of the Companion as a legal proof. However, it is not fully understood how the legal judgments of the Companion have been utilized in this school also. This article investigates the controversy over the legal function of the Companion's legal judgment in the early Shafi‘ī school before the 11th century from the writings of Salāḥ al-Dīn al-‘Alā’ī and Badr al-Dīn al-Zarkashī in the 14th century. Through an analysis of this controversy, I will clarify how the saying of the Companion has been considered to change the precedence and priority of legal analogies (qiyāsāt) as a normative judicial precedent in this
