Georgescu-Roegen’s attempts to reconstruct economic science by introducing the entropy law. He insists that technology based on solar energy did not prevail because the technology itself is not viable, and not because it was not competitive in the market economy. However, the input–output table he used to reach this assertion reveals, rather, that the technology’s noncompetitiveness was what ultimately underpinned its nonprevalence in the market. The reason for his failure of insight, it seems, stems from his proclivity to explain economic phenomena in terms of “natural laws.” This paper highlights the similarities between the approaches of Georgescu-Roegen and Jevons, and discusses a methodology that can be used whenever economics faces questions that relate closely to natural laws (e.g., energy and environmental
