| 内容記述 | 20世紀転換期における米国は、フロンティアの消滅を迎え、急速な工業化と都市化を果たした。また大量移民の流入により国内社会が大きな変容を迫られた時代であり、同時に、対外的には帝国主義により国外進出が盛んになっていた時代でもある。この社会変革期に、主にミドルクラス以上の白人女性たちにより女性団体が設立されはじめ、それまでの私的な領域から公共領域への活動圏の拡大が図られた。一方、米国在住のユダヤ人女性たちもその例外ではなく、この時期に従来のユダヤ教の文脈の中での活動領域を超え、公的な女性団体を設立している。本稿では、全米ユダヤ人女性会議(National Council of Jewish Women, NCJW)とアメリカ・女性シオニスト団体であるハダッサ(Hadassah)という二つの女性団体を取り上げ、それぞれのユダヤ教(Judaism)の伝統についての解釈に焦点を当てる。そして、その作業を通じて、彼女たちの曖昧且つ変容する複雑な解釈から、同時代のアメリカにおけるユダヤ教改革運動の実態の一端を浮き彫りにすることを目的としている。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | In the transition to the 20th century, the United States—as its frontier disappeared—began to rapidly industrialize and urbanize. Further, the simultaneous massive influx of immigrants brought major transformations to domestic society while imperialism flourished outside the country. During this period of social transformation, women's organizations sprung up, established mainly by middle-class white women, and their activities gradually expanded from the private to the public sphere. Jewish women were no exception to this trend, and they established public women's organizations that became involved in activities beyond the context of traditional Judaism. In this paper, I focus on two Jewish women's organizations—the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) and Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America—to interpret early-century Judaism. I examine the reality of the Jewish reform movement in the United States at that time, the ambiguous and complex interpretations of Judaism, and the organizations' attempts to reinterpret traditional Judaism. | |||||||||||
