The historical material expresses objection against a male teacher's attempt to intervene to the School, which had been administered by a group of female congregation of Free St. John's to provide education to female parishioners. The material is significant in examining not only the situation of girls' education in contemporary Scottish society, but also the self-awareness of the affiliates of the Free Church, which was emphasizing church autonomy in terms of personnel and finance, against intervention from secular
