To provide an insight into the issue, this paper first contextualizes Italian CLIL teacher training within the policy recommendations provided by the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Education. It goes on to describe in detail various CLIL classes, based on class observations with a particular focus on English as the vehicular language, to explore issues related to class management. Finally, it presents the outcomes of this new approach, drawing on observational data and interviews, to uncover the descriptive characteristics of the individuals involved in class coordination (teachers in Northern Italy who coordinate the CLIL curriculum) and the extent to which teachers displayed a willingness to communicate in the vehicular language of instruction.
