 note = {19世紀から20世紀にかけてドイツ神学界を代表するプロテスタント神学者で教理史家であったアドルフ・ハルナックが1900年に出版した『キリスト教の本質』は広汎な議論を惹起し、その反響はユダヤ教界にまで及んだ。『キリスト教の本質』に刺激を受けたユダヤ教神学者レオ・ベックは『ユダヤ教の本質』を著し、ハルナックのみならず当時のキリスト教界に共有されていたユダヤ教に対する誤解と偏見、特にユダヤ教とはキリスト教が誕生せざるを得なかった暗黒の背景であるという見方への弁証を試みた。ハルナックとベックが直接対話することはなかったが、『キリスト教の本質』と『ユダヤ教の本質』はそれぞれ両著者のモノローグであるにも拘わらず、ある意味でキリスト教とユダヤ教のダイアローグとして読むことができると見る向きもある。この観点から両者の見解を比較検討し、この「対話」が神学に与えた影響を考察する。, The book "What is Christianity?" (Das Wesen des Christentums), written by Adolf Harnack, who was a Protestant theologian, church historian, and a representative German theologian of the 19th and 20th centuries, caused much discussion not only among Christian circles but also within Judaism. Jewish theologian Leo Baeck, who was stimulated by Harnack's book, wrote "What is Judaism?" (Das Wesen des Judentums) in order to dispel Christian misunderstandings and prejudices about Judaism, especially the view that Judaism represents the dark historical background out of which Christianity emerged. Even though Harnack and Baeck never met in person, and both "What is Christianity?" and "What is Judaism?" are written as monologues, some people suggest these pieces can be read as a form of dialogue between Christianity and Judaism.
