It aims to clarify the reason behind the use of the passive voice in novels. The result of the study shows that on the basis of the “fixed viewpoint principle” in the novel’s structure, the passive voice is used in order to make the central character a first-person narrator. However, in third person novels such as “Meian”, changes in the perspective occur throughout the text. In such cases, it is clear that the passive voice is selected in order to show the surrounding characters' subjective emotions such as “annoyance or benefit”, or to change the flow of the narrative by moving from the central character's point of view to that of surrounding
