The proliferation of bicycle use started, in earnest, at the turn of the 20th century. Between 1900 and 1910, Germany experienced its fastest population increase to date; its percentage of the population living in large cities (over 100,000) also increased during this period. The relationship between urbanization and transportation during this period has been primary researched from the viewpoint of railway transportation. However, we can also hypothesize a relationship between urbanization and the proliferation of bicycles during this
