| 内容記述 | 1880年のセンサス以来,合衆国における小作問題に関しては多くの研究が行われてきたが,農場の貸し手についてはほとんど顧みられてこなかった.そこで本稿では,南北戦争以前期の合衆国北部における農場の貸し手としての手作地主に焦点をあて,彼らの資産保有の特質を詳細に分析することを通して,その特質を明らかにすることを目的としている. 実証分析を通して得た主要な結論は以下の4点である.第1に南北戦争直前の合衆国北部において手作地主の資産保有は大きく,家計内に複数の資産保有者を有する割合が高い.第2にそれらの家計における複数資産保有は相続を通じた資産分割によるものであり,手作地主が長期的・継続的に農場経営を行っていたといえる.そして第3により大きな資産を有する手作地主が農場の貸し手として機能していた.したがって,第4に農民自身が農場の貸し手としての役割を担っていたという意味で,手作地主の存在は南北戦争以前期の合衆国の農業生産・経済発展に一定の役割を果たした. | |||||

| 内容記述 | Following the 10th Census (1880), although many analyses of farm tenants have appeared in many studies, there has not been much consideration of who the farm lenders were or how they worked. This study aims to analyze the property-holding status of cultivating-landlords in the antebellum North, and to examine their common characteristics. The results of the analyses are as follows. (1) Cultivating-landlords tended to have more property-holding members within their households, and this is one of their defining characteristics; the amount of property held by cultivating-landlords also tended to be higher than that held by households of another agricultural status (e.g., owners, tenants, or part-tenants), (2)the aforementioned characteristic is emphasized among multi-generation property holders who have divided their property, this means that cultivating-landlords have tended to operate their farms over longer periods, (3) cultivating-landlords played a central role as farm lenders, and (4) they also functioned as the subjects of agricultural development in the antebellum North. | |||||
