| 内容記述 | 個人が何らかの理由で現在偏向的であるとき,個人貯蓄の減少により長期的に資本蓄積が阻害されるのではないかという懸念がある.しかし,現在の経済行動が長期効果を持つ場合には,マクロ的には資本蓄積が促される可能性がある.本稿では,Gul and Pesendorfer (2001)の誘惑と自制心(temptation and self-control)モデルに,Barro and Becker (1989)の出生率内生化のモデルを追加し,この可能性を理論的に示す.主な結論は次の3つである.第1に,個人の認識する自制コストが大きいほど,出生率が上昇し,長期成長率が高くなる.第2に,自制コストが大きいほど1人あたりの所得水準は低下する.最後に,自制コストが大きいほど,資本成長率は短期的には低いものの長期的には高くなる.本稿の分析結果は,自制コストの異なる経済を比較するとき,経済的な豊かさと経済成長の間に負の相関が観察されることを示唆している. | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | It has been argued that present-biased individuals tend to reduce private savings, which discourages capital accumulation in the long term. However, this is not true, if some action chosen by present-biased individuals has a growth-enhancing effect. In a simple model of temptation and self-control à la Gul and Pesendorfer (2001), combined with the concept of endogenous fertility à la Barro and Becker (1989), we show that if individuals face strong self-control problems, then (1) fertility is higher, (2) per-capita income is smaller, and (3) the rate of capital growth is lower in the short term, but higher in the long term. Our model suggests that a trade-off exists between individual well-being and economic growth, among countries that differ in terms of the cost of self-control. | |||||||||||
