His beliefs were based on the philanthropic ambitions of the Rockefeller family, who established the University of Chicago at the request of the Baptist Church. During the time of Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction, problems of black education in poorer communities and racial discrimination hindered the growth of industry in the South. The Baptist Church and businessmen needed a foundation with both funds and an ability to organize to encourage an education movement in the South.
