| 内容記述 | 本論文は、中近世における欧州諸国の貨幣史を簡単に振り返ったあと、商品貨幣という貨幣供給にかかわる制度的な制約の下で経済発展とともに生じた通貨不足や金銀貨の並行流通に起因する通貨間の換算問題という中近世欧州諸国における貨幣をめぐる諸問題について各国の政府や民間部門がどのように対応してきたかに関する議論を経済学的な視点から展望するものである。その際、貨幣制度と決済という2つの概念を基軸に据えるところに特色があり、その結果、次のような事実が確認された。第1は、対外交易と国内取引との間での決済手段の分離である。第2は、計算貨幣と実体貨幣の分離である。第3は、貨幣以外の決済手段の開発と集中的な支払決済機構の確立である。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper surveys the discussions on the history of money in European medieval and early-modern times. In these times, gold, silver, and copper coins were used to denominate and settle commercial transactions. As the economy developed, most countries and regions faced the problem of monetary shortages due to the limited supply of gold and silver bullion and the high cost of coinage for copper coins. Debasement of silver coins was adopted as a common measure, and hampered monetary circulation. We found that government and private sector efforts to cope with these problems led to the emergence of (a) the dual currency system, or separation of payment media for overseas and domestic transactions; (b) the use of money of account for bookkeeping and settling large transactions; and (c) the establishment of the central funds settlement institution via exchange bills across the European countries. | |||||||||||
