| 内容記述 | 南方熊楠(1867-1941)は長年に亘るアメリカとイギリスにおける海外遊学の経験を持つ民俗学者・生物学者である。本論は南方の宗教観を取り上げるが、このテーマについてはすでに多くの人が論じてきた。これまでの先行研究においては、仏教を中心とした問題が取り上げられてきた。しかし、本論では、これまで言及されながらも深く取り扱われなかったキリスト教を中心に取り扱う。基本資料は、南方が書いたイギリス人インド学者M. Monier-Williamsに対する批判・解説を含む書簡である。まずMonier-Williamsの著作の性格とその時代背景、また南方が本書を読んだと推定できる時期について述べ、後者については新たな見解を提示した。続いて書簡を分析し、南方は、Monier-Williamsが自論において、仏教を宗教から排除し、超越的な神を土台とする宗教の定義を最重要視していることを問題としている点を明らかにした。さらに、南方が仏教の自力救済と近代科学との親和性が高いと考えた因果論に関して若干の考察を試みた。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Kumagusu Minakata (1867-1941) was a prominent Japanese folklorist and biologist who spent a long period of time studying in Britain and America. This paper discusses his religious views. This is by no means the first attempt to focus on this topic. However, while previous studies tend to focus on the Buddhist aspects, this paper puts greater emphasis on Christianity. For this, Minakata's letters containing his criticism of the British Indologist, M. Monier-Williams, have been relied on. After an introduction to the historical background and the nature of the work, a new view is presented about the possible time when Minakata might have read the book. Then, based on letters, it is revealed that for Minakata the greatest concern was Monier-Williams's definition of religion, which is centered around the concept of a transcendental God and thus excludes Buddhism from the ranks of religion. Finally, a brief inquiry is made about Minakata's views on the affinity of the Buddhist concept of self-salvation and modern scientific thought with the idea of karmaor causation. | |||||
