The golden calf episode involved the Israelites' worship of a golden calf at the foot of Mount Sinai while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God at the top. The episode was used by Christianity to attack Judaism but was also very problematic for Judaism on its own terms. Interestingly, interpretations by both sides tend to defend Aaron, who, according to the account in Exodus, played a very important part. Their reasons for defending him are completely different, however. To show both perspectives, this paper draws on the Jewish traditions represented by Tannaim and Amoraim and the Christian traditions represented mainly by the Church Fathers up to Ephrem the
