In Europe, businesses involving the body were considered lowly. Music and dance as art forms are strongly tied to bodily motions. When a composer writes music, he or she visualizes the various postures of the body. The notes, therefore, must also be understood as corresponding to physical postures. Among the different ages, composers and styles of music, there are implied and shared physical postures that are considered appropriate for certain music. When a musician follows the notes, he or she will be playing with these tacitly understood postures in mind. In music, the vibrations of the body, sound and air are interconnected. So a listener can imagine the posture which caused the vibration, without witnessing the actual posture in advance.
