Employing a mathematical approach to understand psychological phenomena is a powerful means of discovering latent structures such as those hidden in a spurious correlation or portrayed in a path diagram. Information in the data obtained from mathematical analysis when represented graphically can be apprehended easily. However, it is sometimes difficult to analyze mathematically the models used in social sciences. In such cases, we can either analyze problems numerically or investigate the characteristics of the model via computer simulation. Computers are powerful tools that help overcome difficulties encountered in representing complex systems in social sciences. In the current scenario of personal computers (PCs) being high powered and widely used, we can automate experiments and deliver various stimuli using PCs. While PCs are used in diverse areas such as data analyses, simulations and experiments, their function is regulated by programs. Hence, sound knowledge of programming is important for making good use of PCs.
