An undergraduate course for journalism was first set up in the 1990s; subsequently, media and communication-related courses became popular. Nowadays, unregulated qualifications such as NVQ and those offered by NCTJ, besides other factors such as in-company training, have complicated journalism education in the UK. Additionally, the number of candidates applying for journalism courses has clearly exceeded the demand for journalists. As these candidates have to not only obtain degrees or diplomas to secure jobs amid fierce competition but also work without pay to gain experience, the financial help they receive from their homes is indispensable for bearing training costs. Therefore, it has been observed that an increasing number of journalists come from affluent
