For this purpose, this paper uses prefectural data classified according to economic activities, and employs a shift-share analysis. The results of the analysis reveal that economic disparities among the regions with decreasing populations have widened considerably, and that the major industry involved in these disparities is the electric machinery sector, which had been one of the significant contributors to the recent spate of national/regional economic
