| 内容記述 | シェイクスピアの歴史劇『ヘンリー四世』に登場する道化的騎士の名が、現在のサー・ジョン・フォルスタッフへと変更された経緯と理由を考察するなかで、プロテスタントの殉教者サー・ジョン・オールドキャッスルと、カトリックの歴史的殉教者エドマンド・キャンピオンの重要な影響を考慮し、そこに殉教の文化の強固な実在を見るが、それが示唆するのは、近代における主体形成の殉教者的死と脱殉教者的生の二方向の共存である。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Regarding, in Shakespeare's Henry the Fourth, some shadowy presence of two historical martyrs (Sir John Oldcastle the Protestant hero as well as Edmund Campion the Catholic saint, the latter of whom Shakespeare arguably met in his lost years) in the character of Sir John Falstaff, this essay suggests some strong influence of the post-reformation culture of martyrdom which definitely constructed early modern subjectivity in two oppositional (but sometimes parallel) directions of life and death. | |||||||||||
