First, to investigate the vocabulary in English instruction in Japan, we analyze not only basic information such as word frequency but also the relation between grades and the common vocabulary lists in use. The results revealed that there is almost no correlation between grades and the level in vocabulary lists employed for teaching English in Japan. Second, this research provides information on factors related to readability and estimates the readability of the textbooks.
