In 1940 the Japan Orthodox Church severed relations with the Moscow Patriarch. In the same year, Sergius was ousted from his position as the head of the Japanese Church. In 1945 the Japanese special police on suspicion of being a Soviet spy arrested him. Due to his intention to follow the Church Canon, he maintained connections with Russia and considered the Moscow Patriarchate legitimate. He was indifferent toward politics but misunderstood the consequences of supporting the Soviet
