It was erected in 1893 to commemorate a special gift of $11,500 from Mr. and Mrs. Clarke to Doshisha through the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Using new materials and data, including portraits, his career, and his family's graves, this paper clarifies the identity of Clarke that has been kept in the dark for such a long time.
