Can religious pluralism, however, play the same critical role in non-Western society? This article examines this question by focusing on Katsumi Takizawa as a religious pluralist. Takizawa argued that salvation could be attained not only through Christianity but also through Japanese religions, and he criticized the exclusivity of Christianity. Takizawa maintained, however, that the truth was revealed also in Japanese Kokutai on the basis of this pluralistic thought, and he criticized the Christianity, which refused to admit its own relativity, arguing that it is incompatible with Kokutai. In Japan, then, pluralism works ad an \"exclusivism\" that excludes / assimilates the
