Osteoporosis is characterized by excess bone resorption by osteoclasts followed by reduced bone formation by osteoblasts. Pentosidine has been reported to be elevated in osteoporotic patients' serum, forming an abnormal cross-link with collagen protein, and reducing bone quality.\nIntracellular AGE formation reduces osteoclastogenesis by reducing cell-cell fusion and inhibiting osteoclastogenic gene expression.
