| 内容記述 | 本稿の主人公は日本のために造られた、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて当時世界最強或いは最速を誇った英国製大型艦船-具体的には軍艦-である。日英関係の産物である、これらの船たちをある社会通念に基づき象徴的機能を持つ「記号」として解釈すれば、或いは複数の記号性の束としての有機的な「テクスト」として解釈すれば、この時代の日英両国間の政治的通商的関係はどのように切り取ることが出来るだろうか。古代ヘルメス思想においても現代の記号論においても共通して、テクストは「開かれた世界」であり、「それを解釈する者は無限の相互関係を発見することが出来る」(エーコ、1993)のであるが、本稿の目的は最終的に「開かれた世界」としての船たちが日英両国にとって持っていた存在の意味を比較的自由に解釈することである。そのためにはある一定の歴史的事実の再検証が必要となり、第1節と第2節はそのために割かれることとなる。第3節はそれにのっとった記号論的考察である。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Why was the Imperial Japanese Navy so successful in the Battle of Tsushima in 1905, which has been described as one of the most decisive naval battles in history? It was partly because of the British-built superior ships and armament and partly because of the higher realms of intelligence with perfectly pre-arranged system of secret service (Chapman, 2003). This paper focusses on the mechanical aspects of the issue with particular interests in the Japanese warships produced by W. G. Armstrong (1810-1900), which were the largest, fastest or most formidable vessels of their day. In this paper, Armstrong's battleships and cruisers for the Imperial Japanese Navy are interpreted as non-verbal 'signs' and 'texts' (cf. Eco, 1976 & 1993), and the contents of these signs/texts that we observe shed some light on both rosy and rather mercenary aspects of the Anglo-Japanese relations between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. | |||||
