Tau is a microtubule associated protein localized in axon and assumed to promote microtubule stabilization in healthy neuron. In contrast, accumulation of hyperphosphorylated tau in somatodendrite and loss of microtubules (tubulin) are observed in tauopathy neuron. Although it is believed that abnormal phosphorylation of tau results in neurodegeneration, the relation with tau abnormalities and microtubule loss remains unclear.
