Investigations into the relationships between comfort with one's own sexuality and both prosocial personality and mental health Tromovitch, Philip open access DA18202107 同志社大学ハリス理化学研究所 Harris Science Research Institute of Doshisha University 498.39 MLEPP mental health prosocial personality sexual comfort MMCS1 The second phase of the Multinational Life Experience and Personality Project (MLEPP) has been collecting data in waves since mid-September 2018. At the time of the present analyses, sufficient data to perform preliminary analyses had been collected from six territories (the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, South Korea, & Taiwan). The MLEPP questionnaire is administered online to adults, collecting data on prosocial personality traits (i.e., altruism, warmth, & understanding) as well as mental health (i.e., levels of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, & self-esteem). The questionnaire also collects data on comfort with one's own sexual life (i.e., sexual comfort). Twelve samples (n = 500 per sample; combined sample N = 6000) were formed for the present analyses. Investigation #1: Sexual comfort was found to be associated with higher mental health in all 12 samples (combined sample r = .36, p < .001). Sexual comfort was also associated with prosocial personality in all 12 samples (combined sample r = .27, p < .001). Although strong correlations were found between the variables, the cross-sectional nature of the investigation and the correlational approach cannot determine if sexual comfort causally leads to better mental health and prosocial personality, better mental health and/or prosocial personality causes sexual comfort, or if third variables are responsible for the associations. Investigation #2: Composite measures of prosocial personality and mental health were created, and their correlation with sexual comfort was examined while controlling for five aspects of family background. It was found that although the zero-order correlations were reduced by controlling for family background, the reduction was small and the partial correlations all remained statistically significant (p < .001).
